The closing conference occasioned by the completion of the EEA and Norway Grants 2007-2009 took place in Bucharest on June 7th. The event brought together over 220 participants, project promoters, media, National Focal Point and Innovation Norway staff, representatives of Norwegian companies in Romania, and the diplomatic corps.

A state-of-the-art conservation and storage center for cultural heritage objects has recently been opened at Astra Open Air Museum in Sibiu, as part of an EEA Grants funded project with Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein as donors. The inauguration event took place on March 25th in the presence of the Norwegian ambassador, Mr. Hovdkinn, Norwegian project partners, and local authorities.

Between April 4-6 the Norwegian ambassador, Mr. Øystein Hovdkinn paid a visit to several EEA Grants projects in Transylvania to assess implementation progress and results achieved. The visit ended with the inauguration of the 5th Gate of the Vauban Fortification in Alba Iulia, restored with a grant from Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein through the EEA Financial Mechanism.

Between March 9th – 11th, Mr. Øystein Hovdkinn, the ambassador of Norway to Romania, has undertaken a study tour in western Romania and visited projects developed under the EEA and Norway Grants in the area. The scope of the site-visits was to assess the implementation progress of the two selected projects as well the promoters’ readiness to finalize all eligible activities by April 2011.

A new agreement on a future EEA financial assistance scheme has been signed with the EU on July 28th 2010. The financial contribution will amount to 1,79 billion euro for the period 2009–2014 for the 15 beneficiary states of the EEA Financial Mechanisms. As compared to the EEA and Norway Grants 2004-09, this represents an increase of 22%.

Between 29th September – 2nd of October 2010, Ambassador Øystein Hovdkinn was present for the first time in the eastern part of Romania in an official visit to assess the progress of several projects supported under the EEA Financial Mechanism (EEA Grants) and the Norwegian Cooperation Programme with Romania (Norway Grants) and met with regional and local authorities from Galati and Braila.
