The project “Restoration of Gabroveni Inn” is developed by the Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony in partnership with the Centre for Cultural Projects of the Municipality of Bucharest and UNDP Romania aiming at establishing an European Cultural in the premises of this historic Inn. The project is supported through a grant of 2,550,000 Euro under the EEA Financial Mechanism, with Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland as donors. The Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony, as project promoter, is contributing with substantial national co-funding of 450.000 Euro to the development of the project, whilst the Municipality of Bucharest is providing support for completing the construction work and building an annex to the main building on 88-90 Lipscani Street.
“I trust this project will turn out to be a successful example of reviving the cultural heritage of Bucharest and the legacies of a beautiful historic centre to the benefit of modern society, which will furtner increase the awareness and interest of the Romanians with regard to learning of the past and protecting the cultural heritage.” Ambassador Hovdkinn said in his remarks during the event.
A main objective of the project “Restoration of Gabroveni Inn” is to offer a best practice example and professional excellence for the rehabilitation of the historic centre of Bucharest, by bringing back to life and into the public circuit an old edifice that will serve as a cultural centre with complex functionality. The project combines the architectural side with a social component by offering youngsters the chance to receive vocational training and be recruited to work in the project, with support from UNDP Romania.
A total number of 42 architectural projects registered in the competition launched by the Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony under the patronage of the Architects’ Order in Romania in the fall 2009. The architectural solution of Metaconcept Design has been ranked the first among the competing proposals.
The three EEA/EFTA donor countries have allocated 98,5 million Euro in project assistance to Romania for the period 2009-2011, in several key sectors for the social and economical development of Romania including cultural heritage. The project “Restoration of Gabroveni Inn” is the largest project in cultural heritage supported through the EEA Grants.
